Visual Art

Sometimes I try my hand at visual art, book arts, and other types of self-publishing.  In this photo you can see me painting one of the murals I have contributed to at the Community Cycling Center in Portland, Oregon.

I enjoy art that combines information design and careful balance of form.  As an example, in 2003 I created the following comic for the UC Berkeley student publication, the Berkeley Mic, which I co-founded.  It was also published in the student comic magazine, Berzerk.  In the work, I combined science fiction lore with recent robotic advances and controversial research in a visual design that would engage viewers with visual examples as well as academic sources.

At the Independent Publishing Resource Center, I worked for years as an open hours staff member to train volunteers in the nonprofit’s collection of tools for self-publishing, including Adobe software, bookbinding tools, and printmaking equipment.  While at the IPRC I edited a collection of narrative art by local artists into a publication named Daydream.

In other media, I have experimented with stencils and three dimensional objects.  Below you will find the paint job I did on an art bike frame.
