Web
Nonprofits have found my skills in new media and web design very useful for designing engaging websites and coordinating the organizational change needed to ensure its effectiveness. Current web trends allow anyone to moderate a website through the use of tools such as content management systems (CMS), but a significant amount of planning and training is still required to make the project a success.
My web design ability has found a place to thrive at KBOO Community Radio where I have developed the online presence for the station using Drupal CMS in collaboration with a developer. Along with a hired contractor, I worked with them to direct the largest feature upgrade of our website to date. We created a bold, hand-drawn style to our website that pointed the viewer to the content we wanted to promote. As a media-focused website, multiple types of content (audio, blogs, playlists) required constant moderation and I focused on using the strengths of a piece of audio to connect it with related communities online. I established other areas of online growth, including email newsletters and social media, defying the traditional mindset for a broadcast medium yet establishing a consistent brand. Much of this required training volunteers, creating partnerships, adhering to licensing requirements and researching new technologies.
At KBOO, I led our involvement in the Free Music Archive alongside a handful of other leading radio stations to provide an interactive online library of high-quality, legal audio downloads. During my time, we contributed over two hundred recordings in less than a year.
Click here for the Billboard magazine article about the launch of the FMA, in which I am quoted stating “the audience for the site is music lovers, but it will be a huge boon for smaller stations that can’t afford to pay large fees.
At City Repair, a small community sustainability and education organization, I overhauled the website on a very limited budget and quickly diminishing time line. With limited funds, I focused on utilizing volunteers to turn a dysfunctional wiki site into a highly interactive one using the Wordpress CMS. The redesign included the integration of a Google calendar to collaboratively manage and display events, photos to mirror albums created on Flickr, as well as other social media.

“While Marc was the Web Coordinator at KBOO, we greatly improved our web presence. He is the person most responsible for opening the minds of the KBOO Programmer to ideas of public archiving, podcasting, and communicating with our audience using new media technology. Marc is a fabulous teacher, a visionary planner, and a great addition to any team work environment. He will be missed at KBOO.” January 21, 2010
